The practice of allowing residents unlimited numbers of garbage cans for weekly collection has ended with a new waste-disposal contract that includes lower fees.

Under the new contract with Lombard Waste and Recycling Services-which took effect Friday-two garbage cans will be collected for a monthly fee of $8.95. Additional cans will require a 75-cent tag. Previously, the monthly fee of $10.88 did not limit the number of cans.

“It’s a step toward bringing the village more in line with a user-fee approach,” said village Trustee Richard Tross.

Large items will be picked up for $15.

Garbage containers are limited to a maximum 45-gallon capacity, but the village’s waste hauler will lease containers as large as 90 gallons.

“Within two years I expect the village will convert entirely to the large containers, similar to those now used in Chicago,” said Tross.
