In all of the coverage of the recent sun eclipse, I saw no mention of a weird, marvelous side effect. I happened to look down at the sidewalk and saw hundreds of images of the eclipse, each one projected somehow from a leaf overhead. I assume it was some kind of “camera obscura” effect. Whatever the cause, it was utterly surprising and radiantly beautiful.
As I walked along, the hundreds multiplied to thousands, and I assume that throughout the path of the eclipse, millions (billions?) of images could have been witnessed by anyone who looked down rather than up.
