Ethiopia’s Haile Gebreselasie broke the world record in the men’s 5,000 meters Saturday at the Adriaan Paulen Memorial track and field meet.
Gebreselasie’s time of 12 minutes 56.96 seconds was 1.45 seconds better than the mark set by Said Aouita of Morocco in 1987.
In the men’s 100 meters, Leroy Burrell of the United States won easily in 10.08 seconds, beating countryman Tim Montgomery and Marc Blume of Germany.
Carl Lewis led the Santa Monica Track Club to victory in the 4 x 100-meter relay in a stadium-record time of :38.29.
Olympic champion Ellen van Langen of the Netherlands won the women’s 800 meters, taking the lead on the final turn to finish in 2:00.38.
In the women’s 100 meters, Olympic silver medalist Juliet Cuthbert of Jamaica won in :11.24, ahead of Russia’s Olga Bogoslovskaya and Melanie Paschke of Germany.
Allen Johnson led an American sweep in the 110-meter hurdles. Johnson set a stadium record of :13.50, while Courtney Hawkins was second in :13.51 and Jack Pierce finished third in :13.55.
World record-holder Mike Powell won the long jump with a leap of 25 feet 11 inches.
