Joseph B. Hebda’s letter (June 24) is evidence showing why the African-American studies mandate should be placed into action. It is ridiculous for people of other cultures to compare their plight to the African-Americans’.

It’s amazing to me that in 1994 people like Hebda are still so naive. With a mandate such as this, people can learn the true history of America. Children can learn who really built this country. It will give Americans a full understanding of the African-American struggle and help every American child to have the resources to learn the history of America.

Only then can people understand the African-American. With this understanding will come appreciation and respect for a people that has proved throughout history that they are a people of strength and intelligence (contrary to what has been taught) who deserve to be acknowledged by receiving documentation of their true place in history.

In order to be considered an immigrant, you must be willing to migrate. African-Americans had no choice and weren’t as willing as you may think.

This multicultural competitive world that Hebda refers to does not open up the competition to the African-American fairly. African-Americans have always been given a different set of rules. The struggle of African-Americans must continue until they are given the recognition and respect they deserve.
