Twelve northwest suburban communities have been honored with Hometown Awards from Gov. Jim Edgar’s office for fighting gangs through the Regional Action Planning Project.
The project was developed in 1990 to prevent gang organization and violence in the northwest suburbs.
Recipients of the award are Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Mt. Prospect, Palatine, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg and Wheeling.
More than 240 volunteers from the communities carried out an informational program to warn youth and families about the perils of gangs.
They were hailed as a model for gang intervention.
