The Thomas Jefferson commemorative dollar sold out its entire 600,000 issue in only five weeks of mail orders. It was one of the most sought-after coins in the recent commemorative series and the first to sell out before the coins could be released to the mints’ sales centers.
Sale of the coin included a $10 surcharge for the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation. That money will help in the restoration of Jefferson’s home, Monticello, and his retreat home, Poplar Forest. The money also will help fund educational programs.

Proposals for three commemorative coins were heard by the new citizens commemorative coin advisory committee when it met recently in Washington.
The proposals were for a World War II peace accords coin, a national community services coin and a coin marking the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.
The committee will submit a report and recommendations to Congress by December.
