Your editorial on the Rolando Cruz case (July 17) was a disgrace. It appears you need to bring your columnist Eric Zorn onto your editorial board because your editorials continue to perpetuate the notion that no prosecutorial misconduct is involved in DuPage County State’s Attorney Jim Ryan’s continual attempts to prosecute Rolando Cruz for the murder of Jeanine Nicarico.
Saying that it would be “proper” to retry Cruz rests more on your willful ignorance of the case than on considered judgement. For example, your comment that the case hinges “less on physical evidence than on the credibility of witnesses who link Cruz to the murder” contains the implication that there is some physical evidence linking Cruz to the murder.
But as Zorn has repeatedly pointed out there is no physical evidence that links Cruz to the murder. You have obviously chosen to ignore your own columnist to perpetuate a little lie.
Just because people like Jim Ryan wear a tie and coat and appear to be respectable is no reason your paper should continue to reward his despicable behavior in this case.
