A South Holland man who owned numerous rental properties was shot to death in his front yard early Wednesday morning.
South Holland police said they have no motives or suspects in the killing of 47-year-old Linford Gyles, but are investigating whether a disgruntled tenant may have been retaliating against the landlord. Police Chief Dennis Smits noted that Gyles “owned quite a bit of property,” which may have a bearing on the case.
Gyles was returning to his home in the 15300 block of Dobson Avenue after being out with friends, said his wife, Hortense Gyles. Police said he parked his car in the garage and was walking toward the front door of his two-story white brick house when he was shot once in the right side.
Gyles was taken to Olympia Fields Osteopathic Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4 a.m., said a hospital spokeswoman.
Police found one .22-caliber shell casing near the scene and said robbery did not appear to be the motive because Gyles’ money-filled wallet was still in his pocket. Smits said they are looking for a dark four-door car, possibly a Buick.
Hortense Gyles said she had no idea who would have wanted to kill her husband of 13 years. “None whatsoever,” she said.
