Frank James wrote an interesting front-page article (Aug. 6) on the sudden flood of private contributions from Americans to Rwandan refugees.

I submit that the reason Americans are donating now, as opposed to earlier in this terrible crisis, is because the refugees were immediate victims of cholera rather than direct human oppression.

It is simply very easy to view disease as an absolute evil and to whip out the wallet in an effort to defeat it. Unfortunately, when it comes to making an effort to familiarize ourselves with a political or ethnic conflict, we are just too lazy.
