Tempo slows: The Purchasing Management Association of Chicago said Wednesday its index of area business activity fell to 61.6 percent in August on a seasonally adjusted basis from 63 percent in July. In July, the index had slipped to 63 percent from 65.6 percent in June. The group said its employment index fell to 50.2 percent in August from 59 percent in July. A prices-paid index tied to the report rose to 79.3 percent in August from 71.9 percent in July.
