Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Since its opening in 1992, Slammers Sports Grill in Westmont has been on a winning streak.

Fueled by owner Tom Gangas’ high-powered game plan, the place is jumping most days with families, seniors, Little Leaguers and adult ball players who have one thing in common. They’re sports fans who love to eat.

“Everybody’s a player: kids, their parents, softball teams, grandparents. We’ve got raffles, contests, drawings all the time, for the fun of it,” said Gangas.

The menu features more than 80 options to satisfy patrons’ hefty appetites. Those options include more than a dozen appetizers, more than 30 sandwich choices, Mexican dishes and pasta specials, as well as full dinners, pizza, burgers and soup/salad combos. More than 70 types of domestic and imported beer are available.

For adventurous diners, the armadillo eggs appetizer features fried jalapeno peppers stuffed with cheddar cheese. For the famished, the belt-buster burger boasts a full-pound, handpacked beef patty on a half-pound garlic loaf, topped with bacon, onions, lettuce, tomato and cheese. For the sophisticated, the Sicilian turkey sandwich is marinated, egg-brushed, sauteed and served under melted Swiss cheese on a garlic bun.

Dinner options include smoked pork chops, barbecued ribs and marinated chicken kabobs as well as steaks and seafood.

Prices average about $5 for sandwiches ($8 for the belt-buster) and range from about $7 to $12 for dinners that include soup or salad, bread sticks, fries, rice or potato salad.

Carryouts, catering and group reservations also are available.

Before, during, and after dinner, sports buffs have more play options than the Bears have defensive stategies.

For nostalgia fans, there’s sports memorabilia-such as a jersey once worn by Mike Tomczak, former Bears’ quarterback, displayed on the walls. For sports viewers, televisions cover angles of play everywhere throughout the casual dining area, which also offers a giant TV with a 15-foot screen. Athletic patrons can test their skill at table shuffleboard, pool, darts or shooting hoops.

Alfresco dining for about 200 is set among a 50-foot sand pit for the kids, a bocci-ball court and a putting green.
