A 29-year-old South Side man died Saturday and his friend remained in critical condition after the two were shot on the friend’s front porch early Friday.

Eddie Waits of 8041 S. Justine St., who was shot in the back during the attack, was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon at Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Waits was standing with a friend, Ray Taylor, on the front porch of Taylor’s home in the 5300 block of South Hoyne Avenue shortly after midnight Thursday, said Wentworth Area Sgt. Daniel Benoit.

Three men approached and opened fire, Benoit said. Waits tried to enter the home and was shot in the back, while Taylor was shot in the back of the head as he fled down a nearby gangway, Benoit said.

Taylor was listed in critical condition Saturday evening at Cook County Hospital, according to hospital administrator Marlo Hodges.

There were no suspects in custody, and police had not established a motive for the attack, Benoit said.
