The two major-party candidates for Illinois governor have agreed to participate in an hourlong debate Oct. 19 in Chicago.

The debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Illinois and WLS-TV, will be televised at 10:30 p.m. on Channel 7. Republican Gov. Jim Edgar and Democratic challenger Dawn Clark Netsch will be questioned by news reporters and participants in the league’s Illinois Voter Project. The project convened groups of citizens to discuss problems facing the state.

The Netsch and Edgar campaigns are discussing plans for at least one more televised debate, which probably would be held Downstate.
