Classical liberal, David Henderson, has written an article that all conservatives should read-“For liberty and justice” (Op-Ed, Sept. 18).
Henderson warns of the trap that liberals/socialists have been setting for otherwise well-meaning conservatives for several years now. Namely that this great country can no longer afford to be a haven for the oppressed around the world. That open borders will eventually bankrupt us. That the greatest society yet devised by mankind will have to close its borders to new believers in the concepts of a free society.
Why? Because all of these newcomers will bleed us dry and because our increasingly welfare/socialist society can’t afford to take on any more burdens.
And, so, otherwise thinking conservatives are stampeded into losing sight of one of the precepts that made this country great. Many of them are rushing to barricade the borders.
Instead of arguing about how we need to clamp down on immigration, we need to focus right-thinking energies on how we can begin to slow the advance of the welfare/socialist/leviathan state.
After all, how long will it be after a society closes its borders to those who wish to immigrate before it will eventually close its borders to those who wish to emigrate?
