Oh, to have been a fly on the steering wheel.

York’s Dukes will have quite a rooting section Saturday as they pursue their sixth straight boys state cross-country title.

Stepping from a limousine, courtesy of York coach Joe Newton, will be five Parker High (now Robeson) alums.

Sportswriter Bill Gleason is to be on hand, as are former Maine South Athletic Director and basketball coach Bernie Brady; Bill Cohen, a Chicago business executive; Johnny Graham, recently retired AD at Mundelein; and the guest of honor-Dan Casey, vice president of the Chicago restaurant waiters union.

Each year, York dedicates its season to someone, and this year it’s Casey, whose wife, Rose, died two months ago of a heart attack at age 59.

“Casey’s like the godfather of all the old Parker athletes,” says Newton, who played on the 1947-48 basketball team with all of the above except Gleason. “He’s the reason that for 50 years we’ve all hung around together.”
