There appears to be a kind of political psychosis gripping the nation these days. The most recent evidence for this diagnosis was the Nov. 8 election. What other term but “psychotic” best characterizes an electorate persuaded to vote overwhelmingly against its own interests?
Perhaps even more disturbing than the Republicans’ stupendously successful humbug was the near-complete collapse of the opposition. The pusillanimous unwillingness of many Democratic candidates to stand up for their principles plumbed new depths of political perfidy during this midterm election campaign.
In their eagerness to run against their own president, and look as much like Republican clones as possible in the process, these Democrats abandoned and totally neglected the concerns of their traditional constituency. In so doing, they have brought the U.S. to the very brink of a de facto one-party system, thus seriously jeopardizing the political health of the nation.
