A local couple escaped injury early Sunday when a fire heavily damaged their mobile home in an unincorporated area near Zion. Lake County Sheriff’s police reports said Barbara J. Cowart, 43, of 41561 N. Sheridan Rd., Lot 110, plugged in a heater to prevent pipes beneath the home from freezing, and five minutes later she noticed smoke coming up from it. Cowart’s husband turned off the home’s main electrical switch and called for help, reports said. Winthrop Harbor firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze. Reports said 75 percent of the trailer was destroyed.
