Aside from health-food nuts, 49er fans, fitness freaks and (add your own pet peeve in this space) the most insidious threat to workplace sanity these days is the clean-desk club.
For you poor souls afflicted with membership in such an affiliation, stop arranging your paper-clip bin for a moment and start what feebly passes for partying, because Monday has been designated National Clean Off Your Desk Day.
At least that is what The Container Store, a chain that sells products to keep desks organized, is touting in its list of tips for desk cleanliness:
– Forget plain manila for file folders. Instead, use color-coded for different clients or vendors.
– Stack office supplies to save floor space.
– Use the backs of doors for hanging storage racks.
– Reduce phone tag by placing calls first thing in the morning so contacts have all day to get back to you.
– Set aside 15 minutes every Friday to clean up clutter. (That presumes, of course, you can do the job in 15 minutes.)
