Kathleen Parker (“Murder isn’t the solution to abortion,” Op-Ed, Jan. 6) quotes at length a Mark Crutcher who stated “we need some kind of benchmark for what justifies violence in this country” and “we need to decide what our standards are going to be.”

These questions were long ago decided in all the 50 states. The benchmarks for justified violence and “our standards” are clearly set out and defined in the criminal codes.

As an opponent of abortion, I know nevertheless that murder is an unacceptable, immoral and illegal means of expressing one’s opposition. This is clearly stated in all of the state laws, the teachings of all religions and churches, as well as significantly demonstrated by the fate of John Brown, who was duly executed for committing murder to protest slavery.
