The caption under the picture of Pope John Paul II celebrating mass (Jan. 15), which says “raises a glass during a Manila mass,” is a demonstration of ignorance and gross insensitivity to the crucial element of Catholic belief.

The picture illustrates the very essential part of the Catholic mass known as the consecration, in which bread and wine are transformed into the true presence of the body and blood of Christ.

In today’s parlance, your reporter needs a course in cultural sensitivity as well as the simple reality that the sacred “chalice” is of precious metal, not “glass,” which is obvious from the picture.
