Trustees have approved the concept of a commercial and multifamily development planned for an area along La Grange Road.
After a year of revisions, which forced developers Ipema/Taylor of Orland Park to include a 3-acre commercial area instead of housing along La Grange Road at 171st Street, Trustee Gregory Hannon remained opposed to the development for fear that it would set a dangerous high-density precedent.
The concept was approved Monday by a vote of 5-1. Hannon cast the sole opposing vote.
Despite the commercial strip, the number of planned townhouses and condominiums required R6 zoning in an area that traditionally was designated R5, which is for lower-density populations.
The commercial area fronts La Grange Road and gradually works its way east to accommodate 44 condominiums with detached garages and 22 upscale townhouses on an 8- to 10-acre parcel.
Trustees also approved a 14-acre condominium development proposed for an area along 80th Avenue that borders the Metra station. The Tinley Park architect, Dwayne Linden, said the project was scaled down from the original plan of 341 units to 240 total.
In other business, trustees authorized a cooperative $2.7 million street-lighting venture between the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association and the communities that bound 159th Street between La Grange Road and Oak Park Avenue. Tinley Park’s share of the joint project that includes Orland Park and Orland Hills is estimated to be $370,000. The project is expected to begin in the spring of 1996.
