– Animal act: The Clinton administration on Monday proposed weakening the law that protects endangered species. Clinton, fearing Republicans might axe the law, suggests a compromise that puts fewer restrictions on land developers.

– Pakistan killings: A gunman in Karachi, Pakistan, killed two U.S. workers Wednesday. The FBI sent an anti-terrorist team to investigate.

– Daughter duped? Lawyers for Qubilah Shabazz asked a court Wednesday to dismiss murder-for-hire charges against her. The lawyers said she was lured into a plot to try to kill Louis Farrakhan, bitter foe of her slain father, Malcolm X. No decision was made on the dismissal.

– AIDS study: Different strains of the AIDS virus can exist in people and produce new strains more often than thought, a study reported Thursday in the journal Nature. That could make it much more difficult to find an effective vaccine.

– Severed legs: The boyfriend and the husband of Stacey Frobel, 24, passed lie-detector tests Wednesday. Police are hunting the killer of the missing Carol Stream woman; severed legs found recently were tentatively identified as hers.
