The religious right, led by Pat Robertson’s Christian Coalition, would like to do to America what fundamentalists did to the Southern Baptist Convention, take political control. Overzealous religious-right members think they have a corner on the truth. Their programmed theological package is neatly wrapped in an American flag. Do they know that a person can be a citizen of God’s kingdom and not be a Republican, a capitalist, a fundamentalist or an American?
Citizens must be wary of people like Robertson, who say they are doing something because God told them to. James I. Spainhower, a former state treasurer of Missouri and an ordained minister of the Christian Church, wrote in his book “Pulpit, Pew and Politics, “The individual who claims to have a divine patent on what is `right’ has the makings of a dangerous demagogue, whether in politics or any other area of life.”
I am a Southern Baptist who has seen over the past 15 years the bitter fruit our denomination has reaped from the greed and lust for power sown by fundamentalists. The reins of power in the hands of the Christian Coalition would not be good for America. God works best through His children who have no desire to be rich, famous and powerful.
