What is going on here? After finishing the story headlined “Second coffee lawsuit to burn McDonald’s” (May 12), I no longer wonder why legal (and food) costs are so outrageous. Mr. MacNaughton insists that hot coffee spilled and caused “first-, second- and third-degree burns” on his body.
Come on, now! First-degree burns I can see, and maybe second-degree, but third-degree burns are classified as burns that cause charring and blackening of the skin and associated tissue. Being in the medical field, I know that if the coffee were that hot, no Styrofoam cup would be able to contain it. The worst part is that it will take not only expensive lawyers on both sides to figure that out but an expensive judge as well. Maybe Mr. MacNaughton should just buy a coffee pot instead.
