It happens just once a year. Jackie Shen, of Lawry’s The Prime Rib, is usually the top chef in the kitchen, but Sunday she’ll join 12 other leading women chefs as they combine their talents to help women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.

For the 10th year, some of the Midwest’s finest

women chefs are donating their time, talent and food to prepare an elegant, black-tie-optional, five-course meal to benefit Rainbow House/Arco Iris. Held at the Hotel Inter-Continental, Bread & Roses also will feature a champagne reception and auction.

“Many people don’t know what they can do about family violence,” said Jeri Linas, Rainbow House executive director. “These women chefs have found a way to use their talents to help other women in a very meaningful way.”

Rainbow House provides a safe home, meals, clothing and some financial assistance to women, adolescents and children who are homeless because of family abuse. Each year more than 900 abused women and children learn about alternatives to violence, violence prevention and intervention.

“As women we’re sensitive to the problem,” said Shen, Lawry’s executive chef. “Abused women need a place to go. So once a year we get together and have fun. If this is work, it’s work we were cut out to do.”

Bread & Roses will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hotel Inter-Continental, 500 N. Michigan Ave. Tickets are $125 and may be ordered through Sunday afternoon by calling 312-521-5501.
