European joblessness: Unemployment in the European Union was static at 11 percent, or 18.2 million people, in April, but was down from 11.4 percent a year ago, the European Commission’s statistics office said. Eurostat said that the overall figure has been unchanged for the first four months of the year. The jobless rate in Germany fell to 8.2 percent from 8.6 percent in April last year. The rate in Spain dipped to 22.8 percent from 24.4 percent but remained the highest in the 15-nation bloc, Eurostat said.
