The public outcry to save Lindblom High School has been amazing. Many have suddenly recognized the importance of this institution that gave me the college preparation I needed to attend DePaul University. I just wonder, though, if our African-American community is again reacting too little too late.
During the four years I attended Lindblom, the neighborhood was rough. There were many days parents drove from work, mid-day and after, to pick up their children, amid the gang violence and threats of neighboring school children. Then in 1993 it was announced that Lindblom’s enrollment had dropped alarmingly. Our class (’83) was the largest that ever graduated from the school. . . .
I read once that we as a people react after the fact. Let this be a lesson that we need to all start paying closer attention to what’s going on. And not only that, we need to then make a strong stand for what we believe in.
I urge all Lindblom alumni, parents, students, teachers and concerned citizens to volunteer their efforts to help save this school. It is truly one not worthy of the fate that lies ahead.
