A 28-year-old Fox Lake businessman faces multiple charges after Fox Lake police said they recovered bomb-making materials from his apartment, while Carpentersville police are seeking a suspect who tossed two explosive devices into a home in the 700 block of Navajo Drive.
Todd Banasack, 52 N. Pistakee Lake Rd., the owner of Fox Lake Cellular, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a felon and falsifying a police report after police said they executed a search warrant at Banasack’s apartment Friday.
Fox Lake police Lt. Edward Gerretsen said Detective John Crilly and Officers Mike Behan and Ken Welch searched Banasack’s apartment and found black powder, fuses and other materials used to make bombs, but no assembled devices.
The search also allegedly uncovered a small quantity of cocaine, injectable steroids, syringes and a shotgun, according to police reports.
A warrant to search Banasack’s apartment was obtained because investigators said they believed he had filed a false police report on May 8 stating that $10,000 worth of cellular telephones and other merchandise were stolen from his business. Most of the items reported stolen were found in Banasack’s home, Gerretson said.
Investigators have been unable to determine what Banasack planned to do with the explosives, and there is no evidence linking him with any bombing activities, police said.
In the apparently unrelated Carpentersville incident, a 21-year-old village resident suffered minor injuries after an object crashed through his living room window and exploded a few minutes after midnight Monday, police said.
Other than the broken windows, damage to the home was insignificant, authorities said. A second device, tossed through a basement window, did not explode, police said.
