I was delighted to read Sam Smith’s excellent column (June 12) regarding the impact of NBA rules changes on the playoff series. His knowledge of today’s game and how it has evolved is among the best in the business. Too often, in my opinion, over the last several seasons, Smith has tried to be provocative without being substantive, especially in the matter of Jordan’s return to the game and Smith’s insistence that Pippen be traded.

NBA fans already must suffer the mindless babble of self-appointed experts such as Peter Vecsey, Bill Walton and Marv Albert. To make matters worse, the Bulls’ faithful must endure the impact that Jerry Krause’s ego has on their team.

Keep up the good work, Sam. I enjoyed your insightful and intelligent analysis.
