The stars were out on opening night of the Sportsman’s Park harness meeting.
On display in Saturday’s two $100,000 divisions of the American-National race were some of North America’s finest 3-year-old filly pacers.
The second division was The Big Dipper of this filly firmament and, as expected, the sex-and-gait track record was broken.
Unexpectedly, those who made She’s A Great Lady the 3-to-5 favorite immediately had the feeling their money had been sucked into a black hole as she broke stride leaving the gate.
There was no way she could catch Teen Talk, who outdueled Electrical Express and won by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:52 4/5, obliterating by a full second the track record for a 3-year-old filly pacer set by Immortality in 1993.
Driven for the first time by Anthony Morgan, Teen Talk left from the outside and was a 17.70-1 long shot. She paid $37.40, $12 and $4.40.
“She’s exceptionally quick, and really nice to drive,” Morgan told co-owners Michael Spooner and Myles McLennan in the winner’s circle.
In the first division, 8-5 favorite Diamond Dawn won by 3/4 of a length in 1:55 3/5 and returned $5.20, $3.20 and $2.80.
