It is not yet clear whether Congressman Mel Reynolds has actually violated the law–that is to say, committed a crime. His taped conversations with Beverly Heard, however, amply demonstrate that he is unfit to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The last thing we need in Congress these days is someone who lacks maturity (phone sex?), who demonstrates questionable judgment (phone sex with a teenager?) and who wastes tax dollars (phone sex that took place when Mr. Reynolds was supposedly working). What a betrayal of all of us who believed he represented something infinitely better than Gus Savage.
And in the July 26 Tribune, Reynolds’ wife is quoted as saying, “It’s unbelievable that police officers in this day and age are taping private conversations and not doing their job.”
Speaking personally, Mrs. Reynolds, it seems to me that they are doing their job; that is to say, they are trying to protect my sisters and daughters, my brothers and sons and myself from sexual predation at the hands of people like Mr. Reynolds.
More power to them!
