It’s sort of odd that politicians and educational leaders tend to carry on endlessly about how the path out of poverty leads through the schoolhouse door, then usually fail to provide the poorest of children with the basic tools to do the work they find in the classroom. That’s why Catholic Charities and some 50 county and private agencies in DuPage are holding the fourth annual Back to School Fair on Wednesday. Designed to assist children in low-income families, the fair will provide each child with a bag of school supplies, ranging from pencils and erasers to crayons and notebook paper. In addition, the children will be able to get required immunizations and health and dental screenings. Last year, more than 3,000 such bags were given out.

11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Building K of the College of DuPage, 22d Street and Lambert Road, Glen Ellyn.
