As women become more successful, our gifts to various causes have grown. But while writing checks is important, women need to become vocal donors, leading the way for others.

“Giving Out Loud” is the theme of Wednesday’s annual meeting of the Chicago Foundation for Women. The meeting will feature

speaker Anna Quindlen, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, author and social critic, and a symposium on the role of philanthropy in women’s lives.

“It is important that women take pride in their giving and be as public as they are comfortable being,” said Marianne Philbin, the organization’s executive director. “That will call attention to the need for funding women’s programs and reinforce that women have resources to give.”

Philbin said that historically women have given less money to charities and fewer have sat on foundation boards.

The meeting will begin with a symposium on women in philanthropy. It will be led by five women who will share their perspectives, including a mother and daughter who are carrying on an 80-year tradition of family giving. A luncheon and the speech by Quindlen will follow.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Chicago Foundation for Women is dedicated to increasing resources and opportunities for women and girls.

“Giving Out Loud” will open at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday with registration, to be followed by the symposium at 9 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Drive. The symposium is free; tickets for the luncheon program are $50 and may be purchased by calling 312-266-1176.
