We are sorry to see Valerie Jarrett step down as Chicago’s commissioner of planning and development. Our experience on many difficult issues in Kenwood has been that she is a class act. She listened. She was fair. She had integrity. Most important, she had the courage to be politically incorrect in promoting market-rate housing for working-class and middle-class families in places once set aside as politically controlled reservations for the dependent poor.
She knew that there is no such thing as a good all-poor community and that it was time that Chicago learned the hard lessons of the failure of public housing by promoting mixed-income communities as a norm of healthy urban life.
Thank you, Valerie!
