How well I know. As a member of Chicago’s burgeoning colony of expatriates, I long for the day when a publication with the stature and widespread influence of the Chicago Tribune will do an in-depth report on the malevolent property-tax situation.
For 10 years I tried to sell a sizable piece of Old Town real estate. Finally, with the lure of “creative financing,” it sold on contract in June of 1990. This June it returned to me with a $73,000 back tax bill and protracted attorneys’ fees. Later we can talk about the judicial system.
