A superintendent for a Northbrook contractor was charged Tuesday with testifying falsely at a court hearing into a 1991 worksite accident.

In the mishap, a trench hole collapsed at a Niles construction site, injuring an Abbott Contractors Inc. employee and prompting federal regulators to charge Abbott with willfully violating safety regulations and to level a $10,000 fine.

The new federal charge accuses Mark Atkins, 37, of Carol Stream, with lying at an administrative law hearing into the matter when he said a trench box, which would have prevented the accident, had been placed in the hole.
