Phil Upchurch Sr., 80, the father of jazz guitarist Phil Upchurch Jr., died Dec. 29 in his home in Chicago. Mr. Upchurch, a pianist who played with local jazz bands, taught his son to play guitar. He worked for 25 years as a bus driver for the Chicago Transit Authority and retired in 1980. Survivors include his wife, Ola; his son, Phil; and three daughters, Delores, Iris and Elaine. Services were held Thursday in Broadview.
