A woman found dead on a city street in near-zero weather died after police refused a call from a store clerk to give the drunken woman a ride home.
There is no taxi service in the city after 8 p.m. Police Chief Dave Lukoski said Thursday that officers stopped giving intoxicated people rides home several years ago.
Thirty-eight-year-old Karen Baker’s body was found at 7:39 a.m. Sunday on a sidewalk on East Oshkosh Street. Fond du Lac County Coroner Susan Casper said Baker likely died from exposure.
Baker had been out Saturday night celebrating her birthday and left her car at home because she knew she would be drinking, her sister, Sue Finch of Princeton, said.
