Gov. John Engler on Thursday proposed a modest increase in school aid dollars for the next fiscal year, but some Republican and Democratic lawmakers said school children deserve better.

A bigger share of the $8.6 billion general fund budget that Engler proposed for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1 may have to be shifted to schools, lawmakers said.

Engler’s proposed budget is 4.4 percent higher than spending in the current fiscal year.
