Bell & Howell Co., a Skokie-based information-systems company, said fourth-quarter earnings increased 39 percent, to $14.9 million, or 81 cents a share, from a pro forma $10.7 million, or 80 cents a share, in 1994.

Fourth-quarter sales rose 10 percent, to $239.7 million from $217.9 million. Company officials pointed out that in 1994’s fourth quarter, the company had a one-time tax-benefit gain of $12.1 million. The 1995 per-share data was affected by an increase in the number of shares outstanding.

For the year–Bell & Howell’s first since becoming a publicly traded firm–the company posted a 67 percent increase in earnings, to $19.2 million, or $1.15 per share, from a pro forma $11.5 million, or 87 cents a share, in 1994.
