Great Britain’s 50-pence coin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Normandy invasion has been named coin of the year in an international competition.

The circulating coin, struck in alloy, is seven-sided. Its reverse depicts planes and landing craft, with the denomination at lower right.

Designed by John Mills, the coin had placed first in two categories, most popular and best contemporary event, when preliminary judging took place in December.
