If elected, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Al Salvi vowed Tuesday to work to scuttle a proposed third regional airport near Peotone.

“It would be a multibillion-dollar boondoggle, a payback to corporate contributors and political patrons,” said Salvi, a conservative state representative from unincorporated Lake County near Wauconda. Lt. Gov. Bob Kustra, Salvi’s chief opponent for the GOP Senate nomination in the March 19 primary, supports the Peotone plan, which is being pushed by GOP Gov. Jim Edgar.

Salvi also said he would oppose construction of runways at O’Hare International Airport.
