A March 19 story in the MetroLake section headlined “Harper College looks into how to fund arts, conference center” provides a perfect illustration of why Gov. Jim Edgar’s proposal to throw more money at education would accomplish nothing except pick the pockets of the state’s taxpayers.

Harper College wants to spend $13.65 million on an arts center, and the state has agreed to fund $6.3 million of the cost. This is a facility that is neither needed nor necessary within the scope of providing students with a sound, fundamental education. Give more money to the schools and the “educrats” will waste it on unnecessary facilities, more “administrators” and inflated teacher salaries and pensions. Wake up, Illinois. It is time to shut off this gravy train.
