After months of bitter opposition, residents of Ruffled Feathers, an upscale, single-family home community, have agreed to allow a scaled-down plan for town homes to be built there.
On Monday night, the village approved the building of 66 town homes on 27 lots at the center of the subdivision. If the developer ever seeks to build on the property’s perimeter, it will need approval of a majority of the property owners.
This compromise was forged after residents objected strongly to a proposal to build 62 town homes and 70 small, single-family residences, called golf cottages, on the property. The developer, Court Drive Estates and Sawgrass Ltd., has agreed not to build any of the cottages.
Resident Jay Koehler told the board that about 90 percent of the people who had opposed the original request to build the town homes and cottages had said they could accept the compromise.
He said the compromise gives residents a sense they have some control over what is built in the community, where homes cost up to $1 million.
