Netscape Navigator

Personal Edition 2.0

Produced by Netscape

Communications Inc.

$50, Phone 1-415-528-3777

For Windows 95 and Windows 3.1

While the majority of Internet surfers who use the highly popular Netscape browser download the software from the firm’s World Wide Web site, this product includes both the browser and utilities to guide you through the complex process of configuring a computer to go on-line via an Internet service provider.

Included are setup utilities to allow users to configure machines and then sign up for Internet connectivity from five major national providers: Internet MCI, Netcom, Portal, Concentric Network and PSINet.

The all-important (for novices) setup utility, called a “wizard,” also greatly simplifies the process to configure a machine to go on the Web with an account from smaller local Internet providers. Whether using one of the national services or a local hookup, the monthly connectivity charge will hover around $20.

The Windows 95 version of the software includes the full range of 32-bit Java features that allow a user to experience the most up-to-date and flashy Web sites.

Both versions include a full suite of Internet resources, including the company’s acclaimed newsgroup reader, its e-mail interface, and audio and video file players, as well as the ability to acquire files via older techniques, including FTP and gopher.
