One of four remaining neighborhood taverns had its liquor license pulled recently for not paying city taxes.
Mayor David Pierce, acting as the city’s liquor commissioner, this week announced he has revoked the liquor license of Wilkerson’s Tavern Inc., 715 High St., because its owner, Lonnie Wilkerson, did not pay food and beverage taxes for the last six months of 1995.
In addition, Wilkerson’s did not pay more than $112.50 in city water bills since Oct. 31, failed to pay a fine levied last year for not paying food and beverage taxes, and missed a deadline for paying an installment on overdue food and beverage taxes, according to the announcement of the license revocation.
Pierce also ordered Wilkerson’s to pay $1,144.30 in back taxes, the $150 fine and the water bill.
Wilkerson’s, which has not been open this year, was one of four neighborhood taverns left in the city. Those taverns are located in residential areas, which the zoning code no longer allows.
