Construction projects are slated to get under way when students leave Mokena Elementary School and Mokena Junior High School for the summer break.
A number of projects, most notably a new roof for Mokena Junior High and the older part of the Mokena Elementary School building, are on the agenda, Supt. Roger Reardon told the District 159 school board last week.
The roof is the most important project, Reardon said: “Every time we have a little drizzle, it’s apparent we need a new roof.”
Other major projects include remodeling the former district office into a faculty dining area and turning a former faculty room into a computer technology classroom.
In other business, board members heard a report from curriculum director Linda Ytterberg on the results of the California Achievement Test taken by 3rd through 8th graders in December.
Most of the students, who were tested on math, reading, language arts, science and social studies, posted scores in the top 30 percent of tested students nationwide, Ytterberg said.
“It’s not the numbers. It’s what do the numbers mean,” Reardon said. “They show our students are achieving.”
