A company that distributes religious and holiday decorative items wants to build a 400,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center on land just north of North Avenue on Illinois Highway 53, village officials were told Monday night.
Representatives of the company, Roman Inc., unveiled their plan before the Building, Zoning and Development Committee. The proposal also includes a proposal to use 40,000 square feet for a retail store and 5,000 square feet for a restaurant.
“That (retail area) would screen the warehouse,” said John Berley, assistant village manager. “It would be like a discount outlet where last year’s goods would be sold. I think people would be interested in that.”
The total project is expected to cost $20 million and would employ more than 300 people, officials said. The proposal has been approved by the Plan Commission.
Committee members said they liked the idea, although they objected to one detail, the proposed erection of 18 signs on the property. Agreement on the signs must be reached before final approval is given, officials said.
