About 150 downtown Libertyville businesses said they will do their part for the environment in mid-May, when they begin a commercial recycling project co-sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, the village and a local downtown business organization.

SWALCO board members Thursday approved a contract with Waste Management North Inc. to collect recyclable materials.

SWALCO will fund the $5,000 annual cost during the program’s first year and purchase the recycling collection containers. The village has promised to pick up the tab during the second year if funding is available.

The program will, for the first time, give downtown Libertyville merchants, restaurants and offices a cost-effective way to recycle their paper, cardboard and plastic and glass containers.

More than 450 downtown Highland Park businesses began a similar program March 1, while 65 downtown Grayslake businesses are slated to begin one on Monday.
