Chicago police are investigating why a 47-year-old man lost control of his car and struck a viaduct support pillar on the South Side early Sunday.

Willie J. Edwards, of 8609 S. Colfax Ave., was killed when his 1987 Honda Accord struck a concrete pillar while driving eastbound on 87th Street at about 4:10 a.m.

Edwards was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 a.m., according to a representative from the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
